This course provides an introduction to the concept of strategic human resource management for the hospitality (casino) industry. Students will look at the concept and range of services and products that are provided in the casino industry and use this as a basis for categorizing the operations within each property. Attention will be focused on human resource management trends in the industry, in particular, the movement from the human capital model to the strategic approach to HR management.

Students also will discuss various traditional functions of casino human resource management, including staffing, recruitment and selection, compensation and benefits, performance management, the influence of government legislation on the industry, and human rights and employment equity legislation.

Discussions also will include training and development topics such as onboarding, customer service skill development, compliance training, career/succession planning and approaches to leadership development.

Weekly online discussions will reflect industry-wide human resource concerns in the casino industry and provide the basis for authentic problem-solving and decision-making skill building. Additional readings will help to present a global view of casino HR challenges in the United States, Canada and internationally.

A final assignment helps students to review the broad role that casino HR plays in the growth and development of properties as well as HR’s contribution to revenue generation. This course is designed for entry-level managers and those aspiring to be in gaming management positions.
