Bridging Generations at Work: Communication, Trust, and Succession Readiness (in person)

ID : 877

« back to classes page
Today’s workplace often brings together people from different generations, career stages and lived experiences. Too often, those differences are reduced to labels: “old school,” “entitled,” “resistant to change,” “too sensitive” or “out of touch.” While generational awareness can provide useful context, stereotypes often create unnecessary conflict, weaken trust and prevent teams from learning from one another.

This interactive course helps participants move beyond generational assumptions and build the communication habits that support trust, collaboration and knowledge sharing. Participants will explore how age diversity can become a workplace asset when teams create the psychological safety needed for people to ask questions, share experience, contribute ideas and challenge assumptions respectfully.

Key Learning Objectives:
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
  • Recognize how generational labels and stereotypes can create divides, reduce collaboration and contribute to unnecessary workplace conflict.
  • Explain what current research suggests about the limits of broad generational assumptions in predicting workplace behavior.
  • Distinguish the difference between generational stereotypes and more useful explanations for workplace friction, including age, life stage, career stage, role clarity, prior experience, communication norms, workload and psychological safety.
  • Describe how generational typecasting can damage collaboration, feedback, mentoring, knowledge sharing and succession readiness.
  • Identify how age diversity can become an asset by bringing together different perspectives, experiences and institutional knowledge.
  • Explain Timothy Clark’s Four Stages of Psychological Safety and how each stage supports stronger communication across age and experience differences.
  • Apply the Four Stages of Psychological Safety to reduce barriers that prevent age-diverse teams from learning, contributing, challenging and sharing knowledge effectively.
  • Develop a practical action step for improving trust, communication, and collaboration across generational or experience-based differences in their own workplace.
This course will be submitted for 6 HR General recertification credit hours for the Human Resources Certification Institute (HRCI) and 6 PDCs for the Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM).
