Mediation and conflict resolution have become integral to building efficient operations and mutually beneficial relationships in the business world and in our families and communities. Developed by Extended Studies in partnership with the Neighborhood Mediation Center, this 40-hour program teaches conflict resolution skills that will help professionals from any industry work through difficult conversations, manage disagreements and navigate disputes creatively and collaboratively, enhancing organization efficiency by using the facilitative mediation model.

To earn a certificate in Beginning Mediation and Conflict Resolution, students must complete the required 40 hours of training. Forty hours of mediation training is the widely recognized foundation for those seeking to mediate professionally or bring stronger conflict-management skills to workplaces, schools, legal settings, faith communities and community organizations. If you regularly find yourself helping others resolve disagreements, this course gives you the skills, practice and certificate to take that role to the next level.

Program Topics
  • Conflict and negotiation theory
  • Models of intervention
  • Mediation theory and practice
  • Self-awareness and cultural considerations
  • Mediation process
  • Effective communication techniques
  • Ethics and standards of practice
Please note that if you have already taken the one-day Conflict Resolution and De-Escalation course through Extended Studies, this certification is a natural next step. While the one-day course focuses on navigating conflict more effectively, the 40-hour program takes you deeper into the practice of mediation -- a structured, highly practical process for helping others work through conflict.

This course will be submitted for 40 HR Business/Strategic recertification credit hours for the Human Resources Certification Institute (HRCI) and 40 PDCs for the Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM). For more information about certification and recertification, please visit the HRCI homepage at www.hrci.org or the SHRM homepage at www.shrm.org.
