Lean was pioneered by Toyota to allow the then-small company to compete with much larger companies like Ford Motor Co. that benefited from economies of scale. Using Lean, Toyota was able to reduce unit cost without making large batches, which allowed them to adapt more quickly and inculcate a culture of continuous process improvement that is the envy of firms everywhere.

Course Objectives
You will learn to use Lean to:
  • Identify projects
  • Identify kaizen events to execute the project
  • Develop charters
  • Run Kaizen events
  • Create a Lean culture at your company
  • Manage and sustain Lean culture at your company

Green Belt vs. Black Belt
The Green Belt program focuses on teaching Lean tools for use by individuals and small teams. The Black Belt program trains Green Belt holders to manage teams of Green Belts and others on larger projects. Black Belts may manage multiple projects, train fellow employees and lead company-wide Lean culture change.

Before you Sign-up
The Black Belt program incorporates both instruction and apprenticeship. As a consequence, there is considerable work to be done outside class. Given the amount of work that needs to be completed, there is no certification exam. A pass/fail grade will be used to determine if any work submitted will count toward the certification. Your employer will need to be on board with your taking this class, because much of the work outside class will be at your company, which will benefit from process improvements.

Certification Project
All students will be required to charter and execute a kaizen event with $100K--plus annual savings/impact as part of the certification requirements. Before starting work on a project, a student is required to submit a charter to the instructor for approval.

A student will have two one-hour opportunities to discuss the project with the instructor. These “office hours” are intended to assist the student in completing their kaizen event. The student’s company will need to sign-off on a form certifying the savings have been achieved. The project is due in three months from the start of the class.

12-Month Lean Roadmap - On-site Visit
As part of the certification, the instructor will be with you on-site, for a day, to coach you on creating a 12-month Lean roadmap, aimed at deploying Lean at your organization with the ROI identified. To ensure the road map’s alignment with your company’s strategy and annual goals, senior management’s participation will be key.

As part of this exercise, we will show you the Lean methods that you will then use to:
  • Develop high-level end-to-end process maps
  • Identify paint points, and agree on annual goals and targets
  • Identify implementation-focused projects to meet the targets
  • Create a 12-month deployment roadmap/strategy
  • Develop 1-2 charters in support of the Lean deployment strategy

It is assumed this exercise will be performed in Northern Nevada within driving distance from campus. In case significant driving or over-night stays are required by the instructor, the instructor will need to be compensated for the travel expenses.

The on-site sessions will need to be scheduled within three months of the start of the class at mutually agreed upon times.
