Is it dirt or is it soil? Can you tell just by looking? Your young scientist is about to find out. In Dig It! The Secret Life of Soil, campers ages 9- 12 will become soil detectives, comparing real samples of dirt, soil and compost up close to spot the clues that separate lifeless dirt from living, growing soil. Then we'll put our predictions to the test by planting seeds in each one and tracking which sprouts thrive all week long. Along the way, kids will learn how gardeners turn plain dirt into rich soil using compost and amendments, discover how insects help keep gardens healthy, and get an up-close look at a worm farm to see how wriggly worms recycle food scraps into "black gold." With plenty of hands-on experiments, live demonstrations and teamwork, this camp makes science something kids can see, touch and grow. Best of all, every camper goes home at the end of the week with a plant that they planted and cared for themselves!
